How is ideal body weight calculated?
Several formulas estimate ideal body weight based on height and sex. The Devine formula (1974) is the most commonly used in clinical settings. Robinson (1983), Miller (1983), and Hamwi (1964) provide alternative estimates. This calculator shows all four so you can see a realistic range rather than relying on a single number.
Is there really one ideal weight for my height?
No. Ideal body weight formulas provide a starting reference, but they do not account for muscle mass, bone density, frame size, age, or ethnic variation. A muscular individual will weigh more than these formulas suggest while still being very healthy. Body fat percentage and waist-to-height ratio are better indicators of health than weight alone.
What is a healthy rate of weight change?
For fat loss, 0.5-1% of body weight per week is considered safe and sustainable. For muscle gain, 0.25-0.5% of body weight per month is realistic for intermediate lifters. Faster rates of change increase the risk of muscle loss (when cutting) or excessive fat gain (when bulking).
