What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from your height and weight. It provides a simple screening metric to categorize individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. The formula is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass, so it can overestimate body fat in muscular individuals and underestimate it in older adults with reduced muscle. It also does not account for fat distribution, bone density, age, sex, or ethnicity. Use it as a starting point, not a definitive health assessment.
What is a healthy BMI range?
The World Health Organization classifies a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 as normal weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. These ranges apply to adults aged 20 and older.
