Readiness is the headline health feature of Apple's September 9 launch, and it does not travel down the lineup. watchOS 27 arrives on Monday, September 14 for the Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, and SE 3, but Apple's own comparison page lists the Readiness app and the new Health Sensing System against exactly two models: the Series 12 and the Ultra 4. If you are on a Series 11 or an Ultra 3, you get the new software and none of the new score.
The catch worth understanding before you spend anything: the cutoff is a hardware story, not a licensing one. Apple rebuilt the optical and electrical heart sensors so the watch samples heart rate every five seconds all day and HRV as often as every five minutes, which Macworld puts at 60 times and 24 times more often than the Series 11 respectively. Readiness is built on that sampling density. The second catch is price. Apple's buy page now lists only the SE 3 at $249, the Series 12 from $399 and the Ultra 4 from $799, so there is no discounted last-generation flagship sitting on Apple's own shelf to fall back to.
What Readiness Actually Scores
Apple describes Readiness as a single score from 0 to 10, calculated from recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep score. Instead of leaving you to interpret the number, the watch resolves it into one of four states: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.
That is a meaningful shift in what an Apple Watch is willing to say. Apple has spent years reporting metrics and declining to give an instruction. Vitals, introduced with watchOS 11, told you when your overnight numbers were outliers but stopped short of telling you what to do about it. Readiness is Apple's first native answer to the question the recovery-tracker category was built on, which is whether today is a day to push.
Alongside Readiness, Apple introduced Health Age, which shows how certain metrics track relative to your actual age, and the ability to schedule and buy lab panels covering over 50 biomarkers for $119 through the Health app. Those are software and service features rather than sensor features, and Apple's release does not tie them to the Series 12 hardware the way it ties Readiness.

Two clarifications on that table. The watchOS 27 column comes from Apple's stated compatibility list, so a Series 9 owner does get this year's software. The Readiness and Health Sensing System columns come from Apple's comparison page, which marks both features on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 only. And "Not listed" means exactly that: those models are absent from Apple's current buy page, which is not the same as saying you cannot find one at a carrier or a third-party retailer.
Why Series 11 and Ultra 3 Are Locked Out
The honest answer is that Apple has not published a full engineering rationale, so part of this is inference. What Apple does say is that the Series 12 and Ultra 4 carry an all-new Health Sensing System built on new optical and electrical heart sensors, and that this is what enables heart rate every five seconds all day and HRV up to 24 times more often.
Gadgets and Wearables, reporting on the exclusion, notes the same hardware framing: the new watches use redesigned optical and electrical heart sensors, and Apple developed the Readiness algorithm using data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study. The implication is that Apple validated the score against a sampling density older watches cannot produce, rather than that older watches are being withheld a feature they could run.
Where that argument gets less comfortable is the middle ground. A Series 11 already tracks HRV, resting heart rate, sleep and training load, which is most of what Readiness consumes. A lower-resolution version of the score is technically imaginable, and Apple has not said whether it considered one and rejected it on accuracy grounds or simply chose not to build it. Treat the hardware explanation as well supported for the full-fidelity feature and unproven as a reason no version could ever ship to older watches.
The Catch: Far More Sensing, the Same 24 Hours
Here is the number that did not move. Apple lists the Series 12 at up to 24 hours of normal use, and Apple's own tech specs put the Series 11 at up to 24 hours as well, with both rated up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. The Series 12 samples heart rate 60 times more often and still quotes the same all-day figure, which is a genuine engineering result and also a reminder that Apple protected the headline number rather than extending it.
What did improve on the Series 12 is charging: Apple says 15 minutes now gets up to 12 hours of additional battery, against up to 8 hours on the Series 11. The Ultra line is where the battery story is real. Apple rates the Ultra 4 at more than two days, up to 50 hours, and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode, which Macworld places against 42 and 72 hours on the Ultra 3.
If you were hoping the denser sensing would come with multi-day endurance on the standard Series, it does not. The Series 12 is still a charge-every-night watch, and Readiness depends on overnight data, so the nightly charging window you already navigate does not get easier.
What Series 11 and Ultra 3 Owners Can Do Instead
Not much changes on your wrist, and that is mostly fine. You keep watchOS 27, the Siri and Audio Intelligence software features that are not sensor-gated, hypertension notifications, sleep tracking, and the HRV and resting heart rate history you have already built. What you do not get is Apple's native verdict on top of it.
The practical substitute is the third-party recovery layer that existed precisely because Apple did not ship this feature for years. None of them get the five-second sampling, so they are working from a coarser signal than Readiness will be.
The upgrade case is honest enough to state plainly: if a daily recovery verdict is something you would actually act on, the Series 12 is the cheapest way to get Apple's version, and it costs $399. If you already ignore your Vitals notifications, a denser sensor will not change that.
Readiness Against Whoop, Briefly
The comparison writes itself, and Gadgets and Wearables made it the same day: Apple now ships a daily recovery score, a Health Age estimate and Quest-backed lab panels, which is a recognisable sketch of Whoop's feature set. The same piece puts Whoop's membership tiers at $199, $239 and $359 a year, against a Series 12 that asks $399 once and charges nothing extra for Readiness, HRV or sleep analysis.
The parts of that comparison we would not hand to Apple: Whoop's screenless hardware runs for days rather than one, and its journal and strength-training features have no Apple equivalent. And Readiness is brand new, so nobody has worn it for a training block yet. A score that has not been lived with is a promise, not a track record.
