Quick Verdict
GymKit, the handshake that lets an Apple Watch pair with a cardio machine by tapping it, is no longer watch-only. Apple's iOS 27 page states it plainly: "GymKit comes to iPhone, allowing you to connect to compatible cardio gym equipment like treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and stair-steppers for real-time metrics." The same page lists iOS 27 as available starting September 14, 2026. Pair that with the second half of Apple's sentence, "use AirPods Pro 3 to track your heart rate while you work out," and you have a gym setup with no wrist hardware in it: the machine supplies distance and pace, the AirPods supply heart rate, and the iPhone is the screen and the record.
The catch is the bill of materials, and Apple's own store pages spell it out. Heart rate sensing lives in the AirPods Pro 3 at $249. The AirPods 5 that launched alongside the new iPhones are $129, or $149 with the wireless charging case, and Apple's AirPods 5 buy page shows no heart rate sensing for them. So the newer, cheaper AirPods are the wrong AirPods for this. And $249 is not a coincidental number: it is exactly what Apple charges for the Apple Watch SE 3 on its own buy page. If you were going to buy earbuds anyway this is close to free, and if you were buying hardware specifically to track gym workouts, the watch still does more for the same money.
What Apple Actually Changed
Two separate things landed, and they are easy to conflate.
The first is heart rate sensing in the AirPods Pro 3, which is not new to iOS 27. Apple's AirPods Pro 3 page describes a sensor that pulses invisible light 256 times per second, combined with data from the accelerometers, and says it covers up to 50 different workout types in the Fitness app. Apple's own footnote sets the software floor: the built-in heart rate monitor "is intended for use during workouts with the Fitness app and compatible third-party apps on iPhone running iOS 26 and later." That has been shipping.
The second thing is new, and it is the GymKit handshake itself moving to iPhone. Before iOS 27, connecting to a gym machine meant holding an Apple Watch up to the contactless reader. Now the iPhone can do the tap. That matters because the GymKit connection is two-way: the machine sends its own measurements to the phone, and the phone sends heart rate to the machine's display.
Put differently, AirPods Pro 3 heart rate answered "can I record a workout without a watch." GymKit on iPhone answers "can the treadmill and I agree on how far I ran." Those are different problems, and until September 14 only the first one had a fix.
What the Hands-On Testing Showed
9to5Mac tested this on an iOS 27 beta with a treadmill, and the report is specific enough to be useful. The flow was to tap the iPhone to the treadmill, pick a workout type, and start from the machine. Indoor Walk and Indoor Run were the options offered. Once running, the Fitness app on iPhone received the treadmill's distance, pace, incline and calorie data, while the treadmill received heart rate from the AirPods Pro 3.
Two findings from that testing are worth more than the feature description.
First, the AirPods are not optional. Without them, the reviewer found the iPhone disconnected from the machine when the workout started. Engadget describes the same behavior, that machines will drop an iPhone connection if AirPods Pro 3 are not also present. The reasonable reading is that GymKit expects a live heart rate source from the personal device, and on iPhone the AirPods are the only thing that can be one. This is not a configuration you can economize on.
Second, and this is the honest limitation to carry into a buying decision, the Exercise ring did not update during a watch-free workout in that beta testing. Activity rings are an Apple Watch construct, so this is not surprising, but if closing rings is how you stay motivated, a GymKit-on-iPhone session may not feed the habit loop you actually use. We have not verified whether the shipping release of iOS 27 behaves differently, and neither has anyone else yet. Treat it as beta-stage behavior that needs rechecking after September 14.
The Hardware Question, Priced Out

Read the second row twice, because it is the mistake this feature will actually cause. AirPods 5 are the new model, they are half the price, and they will not do this. If someone walks into a store in October asking for "the AirPods that track my workouts," the answer is the Pro 3, not the 5.
What You Still Do Not Get Without a Watch
Apple has been careful here and so should we. Apple's support documentation frames the AirPods Pro 3 heart rate monitor around workouts, not around continuous monitoring. The sensor runs when you are exercising with the Fitness app, Apple Fitness+, or a supported third-party app. It is not an all-day heart rate stream.
That single distinction decides most of the practical questions. Overnight heart rate, resting heart rate trends built from a full day of samples, HRV baselines, sleep staging and anything derived from them are wrist and finger territory. You cannot sleep in AirPods, and the sensor is not trying to be that product. If you are choosing hardware because you want a recovery score in the morning, this announcement does not change your answer. Apple's own recovery play, Readiness, is a Series 12 and Ultra 4 feature, and we covered which models get it separately.
Accuracy has physical limits too, and Apple documents them rather than hiding them. Its AirPods Pro 3 heart rate guide notes that cold weather can reduce blood flow in your ears and make accurate readings harder, and that earwax buildup, moisture, skin conditions or ear piercings near the sensor can interfere with contact. Useful detail: the same guide confirms heart rate monitoring works while wearing just one of the two AirPods, which matters in a gym where you may want one ear open.
How to Tell Whether Your Gym Can Do This
GymKit support is a property of the machine, not of your phone, and that has not changed. Apple's gym equipment guide tells you to look for "Connects to Apple Watch" or "Connect to Apple Watch" printed on the equipment, then hold your device within a few centimeters of the contactless reader with the display facing it. In practice most gym floors have a minority of machines with that label, and older cardio banks have none.
One caveat on documentation rather than hardware. As of September 11, 2026 Apple's gym equipment support guide still describes the pairing flow entirely in terms of the Apple Watch and does not mention iPhone. The iPhone capability is confirmed on Apple's iOS 27 marketing page and demonstrated in hands-on testing, but the support article had not caught up at the time of writing. Expect the labels on the machines to keep saying "Apple Watch" for a long time even where an iPhone tap now works.
There is also a model question Apple has not answered. Its iOS 27 page lists software support back to the iPhone 11 and the iPhone SE second generation, but it publishes no separate device requirement for GymKit on iPhone. We are not going to guess. If you are relying on this with an older iPhone, verify it on a machine before you count on it.
Who This Is Actually For
Three groups, in order of how much they gain.
The clearest winner is the iPhone owner who already has AirPods Pro 3 and does not want a watch. Cardio at a GymKit-equipped gym now produces a workout record with real machine distance and real heart rate, for no additional spend.
Second is anyone whose watch is dead, charging, or at home. This is a genuine backup path rather than a lost session, which is the framing the hands-on testing used as well.
Third, and smallest, is the person deciding between earbuds and a watch as their first piece of fitness hardware. For that person the honest advice is the watch, at the same $249, unless you know you will never wear one. Apple's support documentation even notes that wearing both at once gives multiple heart rate streams rather than a conflict, so this is not an either-or for people who already own a watch.
Where Vora Fits
The thing that makes this useful beyond the Fitness app is where the data lands. Apple's support article on checking your heart rate with AirPods Pro 3 states that the data is viewable in the Health app, reached through Search, then Heart, then Heart Rate, and that heart rate monitoring is on by default. Once a record is in Apple Health, it is available to apps you have granted permission to.
Vora reads from Apple Health, so a GymKit treadmill session recorded with an iPhone and AirPods Pro 3 is the same class of input to Vora as a session recorded on a watch. Nothing in Vora needs to know which sensor produced the heart rate. Two honest boundaries. We have not tested a GymKit-on-iPhone workout flowing into Vora ourselves, because iOS 27 ships on September 14, so treat the path above as what Apple documents rather than as a hands-on result. And a watch-free setup will not give Vora the overnight and all-day signals that recovery coaching leans on, because that data is not being collected.
